Rodger’s Hollow Restoration Project is Working

The Rodger’s Hollow Stream Capture Project completed in December of 2007 is working as designed. After the multiple stream captures were closed and the stream channel rerouted away from the high wall we have numbers to prove the project’s effectiveness. Stream capture projects have an alkaline addition component for the previously captured water that now remains on the surface. This clean, net alkaline water stays on the surface and is conveyed downstream rather than entering into the underground mine and becoming Acid Mine Drainage. Additionally, there is an acid reduction component where the captured surface water previously popped out of the underground mine as Acid Mine Drainage. If all goes according to plan the project will add alkalinity and reduce acidity to the downstream subwatershed.

Rodger’s Hollow Alkaline Addition: 651-lb/day of alkalinity is now conveyed downstream as a natural, cost effective treatment system.

Rodger’s Hollow Acid Reduction: 18.6-lb/day reduction in acidity at the known Acid Mine Drainage discharge point.
